The Plattsburgh City Police Department has acquired seven new bulletproof vests, thanks to a federal grant that helps cover the costs of essential protective gear for officers.
The new equipment was funded in part by the 'Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Program,' which aims to assist police departments in acquiring life-saving gear.
The grant offsets a portion of the cost, easing the financial burden on local departments.
Mayor Chris Rosenquest emphasized the importance of this assistance, saying, “One of the opportunities that we see is not only getting updated equipment but offsetting some of our operational costs for these lifesaving and protective pieces of critical equipment that's used by our PD.”
The program is specifically designed to provide vests for new hires, ensuring that officers are properly equipped from the start of their service. The Plattsburgh City Police Department will have the opportunity to reapply for another grant next year.
