Phoenix officers killed a man Sunday night who was resisting arrest inside a retail store and had gained control of an officer's stun gun, a police spokesperson said.
The two officers involved were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries received in the fight with the man, according to Sgt. Phil Krynsky of Phonix police.
Officers were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. to the store near 37th and Glendale avenues after police received calls of a man trespassing, said Krynsky, who spoke at a media briefing.
The man ran into a storeroom at the back of the Dollar Tree and climbed on top of a cooler, Krynsky said. As officers pulled him down and attempted to take him into custody, a fight broke out.
The fight moved into the main area of the store, and officers' use of a stun gun didn't have the desired effect, Krynsky said.
During the fight, the man got control of an officer's stun gun, and police shot him, Krynsky said.
Officers provided aid until paramedics arrived. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Krynsky said.
The investigation was in its early stages. It was not immediately known if the man was armed.
The area around the store was expected to be restricted for several hours as the investigation continued, Krynsky said.
No store employees or customers were injured, Krynsky said.
