The French news agency AFP says one of the firm's video journalists, who was covering the Ukraine crisis, was killed on Tuesday near the eastern city of Bakhmut, where fierce fighting continues.

Arman Soldin was a 32-year-old French citizen. He and his fellow AFP crew members were several kilometers west of the epicenter of the fighting in eastern Ukraine when an attack occurred. They were standing near some Ukrainian soldiers. Soldin was reportedly killed when a rocket landed near him.

Soldin arrived in Ukraine immediately after Russia invaded in February of last year. He covered the frontlines in the eastern and southern regions of the country.

AFP posted a photo of a smiling Soldin on Twitter. In the image, he is wearing a helmet and a bullet-proof vest, and he is holding a video camera in one hand.

AFP chair Fabrice Fries said, "His death is a terrible reminder of the risks and dangers faced by journalists every day covering the conflict in Ukraine."

French President Emmanuel Macron also mourned Soldin's death. In a tweet, Macron said that he would like to share the pain of Soldin's relatives and all his colleagues.
