The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is reminding parents, students and families that no weapon of any kind should ever touch school property. The warning and reminder come after a junior high student was found with a "stun gun" Monday.

A DSCO school resource deputy took the device of a student after it was used to stun another student in school.

The student was issued a juvenile court referral for assault.

"There's no good reason for a student to bring any weapon of any type into a school setting," Sheriff Aaron Hanson said.

The device was designed to resemble a key fob. It is small, black and comes with just two buttons. There's a bright light on the front, but once turned on, the device gives off a loud, intense sound.

It does no damage unless pressed against someone. Hanson said that doesn't matter.

"You can face criminal penalties of assault for horseplay or aggressive behavior," Hanson said.

Hanson said it's the first device of its kind found in a school this year but that deputies will now be on the lookout. The devices come in many shapes, sizes and colors and aren't expensive.

Hanson says whether parents decide to let their child get one, or not, they should be teaching the child when, where and how to use it and remind them to never bring it on school property under any circumstances.
