An East Baton Rouge school bus exits the bus garage on Thursday, August 1, 2024 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

A sheriff's deputy unintentionally used a stun gun on a student while working on detail for East Baton Rouge Parish Schools and has been placed on administrative leave, according to a spokesperson for the school system.

Nicholas Davis was working security for the school system on Tuesday when he tried to de-escalate a potential altercation between students at a bus transfer point. As Davis attempted to activate the stun gun's alert noise, the prongs made unintended contact with a student, district spokesperson Perry Robinson said.

Davis, who works in booking processing at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, will be placed on administrative leave from school system duties pending an investigation.

He will also be suspended from working any details until he is recertified and trained to carry a Taser again, an East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office spokesperson said.

"The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our highest priority," Robinson said in a statement.

Additional information was not immediately available.
