Northport Police will be receiving two different grants to cover costs of new tactical gear.

The grants were presented by Northport Police Chief Gerald Burton at the Northport City Council meeting Monday evening.

They will cover new police body cameras and bulletproof vests for the officers.

The body camera grant will cover the entire cost for the body cameras and the grant for the bulletproof vests will cover half.

Sgt. Allen Clark, said officers feel more comfortable and protected with the gear.

Clark says, “With the nature of how some people view the police, it gives you an assurance,” and he also believes the tactical gear will not only benefit police officers but citizens as well.

“It increases and it promotes a sense of comfortability, that officer has knowing that we have appropriate tools and equipment needed to do the job. And again like I said, it also is beneficial to the citizens of Northport cause it increases and promotes transparency on behalf of the police department,” Clark said

All Northport officers currently wear body cameras on their uniforms.
